Škocjan Caves Park
Among all the karst caves in the world, which represent a valuable natural heritage, Škocjan Caves are something special. Not only the largest underground canyon in the world, which impresses every visitor, but there are many more reasons for its exceptional recognition in the Škocjan Caves Regional Park. Škocjan Caves and the entire Regional Park enjoy the highest level of protection, as they have been listed as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site since 1986.

Castle Prem
The castle that protects Brkini and guards the Reka river valley was buildt in the 12th century.
Through history it keept changing hands, from Devin counts, to Walsseis, Habsburgs and Porcia. The two stories tall palace, has romanesque design, while the inner courtyard is decorated by renaissance arcades. The castle is surrounded by high walls, rising above them is a mighty round guard tower. There are many roads for biking or hiking that run along this marvelous historical monument.

Lake Mola
The lake Mola is located in the very heart of Brkini, near village Soza. At its shore is located a lovely fisherman’s cabin with an amazing view of the silent lake. In the lake’s deepths await you many carps, pikes, sheatfish and others. At the lake fishing is permited on a 2km area, but »catch and release« rules apply.

Partisan hospital Zalesje
During WW2 this makeshift hospital, hidden in the woods, was used to treat wounded soliders of the OF as well as local civilians. It operated as a real hospital, with operational room, difrent departments and beds for patients. As such it operated up until January 1945. There is a very pleasent hiking road that leads to the hospital.

Dimnica cave
Between villages Slivje and Markovščina are two 40m chasms connected by a tunel. During the winter the outside air lowers into the big chasm and pushes the warmer cave air out through the smaller chasm. The warmer air condenzes in contact with the colder outside air and makes it look like there is a pile of smoke comming from the cave. The locals, back in the day, tought that this pile of smoke had to be comming from the Devil’s smokehouse. The most impresive thing about this cave is the perfect representation of the phenomenons where krast and normal relief come into contact. You can observe kras cavities, columns and a lot of evidence of human coexistence with nature.

Military History Park
The Military History Park in Pivka is a new and rapidly developing museum and tourist center. The park’s collection is distinguished by very large exhibits, such as various military vehicles, especially tanks and other armored vehicles, planes, a submarine, and finally a military locomotive from World War II.

Hrastovlje
In Hrastovlje there is the famous church of the Holy Trinity, that is hidden behind a defensive wall from the 16th century.
Romanesque church has a high bell tower and the inside is painted with a gothic wall painting from 1490. That painting is the most famous middle-ages wall painting in Slovenia. It depicts the creation of the world, banishment of Adam and Eve from the Paradise, suffering of Christ, farmers working in difrent seassons and most famously The dance of the dead, which represents an incredible achivement of the middle-ages iconography.

Regional park Sečovlje's salt pans
Here the past and the present are still coexisting. The ancient way of working the salt pans, that locals from Piran long ago learned from the salt pan workers from the island of Pag, is to this day something special, even in Mediterenian. Traditional manual salt collecting is not only a special cultural heritage of the Slovenian mediteranian, but also provides the conditions that allow preservation of a very important natural heritage, that are the Sečovlje’s salt pans.

The hilly Brkini are perfect for hiking and biking. Peace, as found in few places today, excellent food, and a sip of local brandy are a unique luxury you will want to enjoy again and again. Numerous local roads are ideal to explore for all who enjoy cycling on less busy roads and love unspoiled nature. Picturesque churches on hillocks and old villages invite you to stop and learn local stories. This hilly world hides many small ridge villages where you will find local fruit processors and taste the noble drop of typical Brkini plum brandy.


HORSEBACK RIDING
Did you know that the noble white Lipizzaner horses come from Slovenia? Their original stud farm has been in Lipica, on the Karst, since 1580. Here, you can admire their elegance during shows and training of classical riding, experience the Karst by carriage, or go for a trail ride. Lipica, with its stud farm operating for over 400 years, is a place of Slovenian pride.
